World Book Day
23rd April: World Book Day
In 1995, on the recommendation of the Catalans, UNESCO decided that World Book Day will be celebrated on 23rd April. This date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. The day is also celebrated as the ‘World Book and Copyright Day’. The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage people to explore the pleasures of books and reading, and to urge each to other to read more.
For the Catalans this day is also the day of their patron saint, Saint George the dragon-killer. On this day the Catalans commemorate ‘roses and books’, as according to legend, Saint George gave a rose that grew from the blood of the dragon to the princess he had saved.
